My Happy Place

After months of hard work and sleeping in the living room, we have finally made major progress on what has turned out to be my favorite room in the world (a.k.a. my happy place).

The master has come a long way, and still has some way to go, but, quite honestly, I have been thoroughly enjoying the results…

Unfortunately I don’t have any before pictures of the master bedroom, but if you can imagine a “smoker’s yellow” (as Rob calls it) wall color, grey 1980s high traffic carpet, and a 1970s ceiling fan, then you have a clear picture of where we started.

I wanted to keep the room bright and airy, and I wanted the option to choose any color scheme imaginable, so we agreed to paint the walls white.  We went with BEHR Maui Mist because it had cool, blue, undertones.  The results were amazing!  Immediately, the room felt bigger, brighter, and very clean.  Not to mention – the corner windows were now a focal point.

We used a 4 inch baseboard trim and a 3 inch door trim, since we had to cover the line from the existing trim.  We may end up putting quarter round on the baseboards to hide the small gaps, but right now we are beyond happy so there’s no rush.  We also painted all of the doors to match.dscn6945At first, I thought I would get crafty and repaint the 1970s ceiling fan, but (after a lot of thought) I took the easy way out.  We decided on a simple and modern brushed nickle Hampton Bay ceiling fan that we fall in love with more and more each day.

After careful consideration we decided to make the trip to Ikea for a bedroom set.  For the record … by careful consideration I mean: trips to multiple Art Van and Gardner White showrooms, antique shops, upscale resale shops, Wayfair, Overstock, Home Goods, Target, etc. and for once all of these places did not have anything I was too crazy about.  Not to mention some items were beyond expensive and, if we were going to pay that much, we had to LOVE it.  So, off to Ikea we went.  I already had the Hemnes line in mind, so when we saw it in person we decided it was the one.  We went with the Black-Brown dresser and nightstands – I liked the red, but Rob reeled me back in on my love of the rainbow  🙂 and I was so glad he did!  The dark is a great contrast to the white walls, plus the dark wood grain lines on the floor match perfectly.  I plan on doing some “Ikea hacks” to the dressers (changing out the nobs/attaching decorative hardware) once I find the motivation and time.

I found two gorgeous lamps from Kirkland’s on clearance (music to my ears when I was planning on spending triple the amount that I ended up spending).  They give off a candle-like feeling and add some glamour to the room.  I wanted something smaller so they wouldn’t take up precious night stand space.  I love the vintage look of the Mercury Glass and it projects a very unique pattern on the wall.

I love to use decorative pieces that have meaning and serve a purpose.  The vase used for the flowers was actually a glass bottle of Sake Rob and I drank while on vacation in Chinatown, New York.  It is one of my favorites because the bottle now serves a new and unique purpose, plus it acts as a reminder of the amazing time we had.

Although most of our existing pieces match the updated room, we just ordered a new bed frame, bedding, and pillows.  Next up is deciding on the wall art design, window treatments, a rug, and accent chair, which could take some time to decide.

Thank you for taking the time to see our progress!

Love,

Those first time renovators

  2. Hello! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog article or vice-versa? My website discusses a lot of the same subjects as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to be interested feel free to send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you! Wonderful blog by the way!

  3. Hello! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to fix this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share. Many thanks!

    1. Hi Julene! I use the “Cubic” theme which seems to be mobile friendly. I have never changed it though, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. When editing your page there should be a drop down menu near the upper left side of the screen that allows you to preview your page in desktop, tablet or phone settings to give you an idea of how it would look.

      Hope this helps.
